CHICAGO (AP) — Seven teenagers were arrested Wednesday in the beating and robbery of a 17-year-old Chicago high school student that was filmed and posted online, city police said.

One of the teens was charged as an adult and the rest — a 15-year-old girl, two 16-year-old boys and three 15-year-old boys — were cited in juvenile delinquency petitions. All were charged with one count each of robbery and aggravated battery, police spokesman Mike Sullivan said.

Throughout the more than 3-minute video, several attackers — many with sweat shirt hoods over their heads and some wearing masks — are seen repeatedly kicking, punching and yelling at the victim as he lay coiled on the snow-covered ground Sunday afternoon in an alley on the city’s South Side.

The video went viral after it was posted on YouTube. Sullivan said that helped to identify the alleged attackers.

One of the teens took the video, and others who posted comments identified the attackers by name, including 17-year-old Raymond Palomino, who was expected in bond court Wednesday morning. Palomino’s face was visible in the video.

Police said the attackers stole shoes, a wallet and $180 in cash from the victim, who was treated at a local hospital for a laceration to his lip, bruises and abrasions.

The videotaped attack on a teen in Chicago isn’t the first to go viral. In 2009, footage of the fatal beating of a 16-year-old honor student was circulated worldwide, providing an example of escalating violence that claimed the lives of more than 20 Chicago public school students in a six-month period.

In that video captured by a cellphone camera, Derrion Albert is seen being punched and hit over his head with large boards and kicked in the head. The fight broke out after classes were dismissed at a high school on Chicago’s South Side.

Four teens were sentenced to lengthy prison sentences last year in the case that sparked outrage around the country. A fifth suspect tried as a juvenile was ordered to remain imprisoned until he turns 21.

Albert’s death prompted President Barack Obama to send U.S. Attorney Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to the city to discuss ways to end the violence.

Blackman-Leoni Township police released a video Tuesday of a stolen police SUV that lead officers on a wild chase through three Michigan counties.

Police say Ryan Elliot Cunningham, 34, escaped custody Friday and stole a Chevy Tahoe safety vehicle.

Cunningham was arrested at the Colonial Inn Motel, 6027 Ann Arbor Road, before stealing the SUV. Blackman-Leoni Sergeant Chris Boulter told the Jackson Citizen Patriot that Cunningham allegedly had a sawed off shotgun, meth and components to make the drug at the motel. Cunningham was in custody in the rear seat of the SUV, wearing nothing but black underwear, when moved to the front seat, stealing the vehicle.

Michigan State Police pursued the SUV on 75 mile chase with speeds exceeding 100mph on 1-94; ending in a crash on US-23 two miles from the Ohio state line.

Cunningham was arraigned Tuesday facing seven felony charges that include fleeing an officer, auto theft, two methamphetamine-related charges and three firearm charges.

Machete attack in New Jersey

CBS/WCBS) PATERSON, N.J. – Police said Wednesday they have arrested
three men who were caught on tape attacking two people in a New Jersey
restaurant, chopping at one victim with a machete.

The Paterson Police Department turned to social media during the search for
suspects Tyree Seegers, Omar Villota and Johel Gomez by posting the
shocking video of the attack on its Facebook page, reports CBS station WCBS. The
incident reportedly took place on Sept. 10 at the U.S. Chicken
restaurant at 194 Straight Street. Police say the “vicious assault”
began just before 4 a.m. According to WCBS, the first victim was
attempting to walk out of the restaurant when he was confronted in the
doorway by two men. Police say Villota then came up behind him and
pistol whipped him in the back of the head. The three attackers then exited into the street.

A short time later, the trio reentered the restaurant struggling with a
second victim. The victim can be seen on tape being punched, allegedly
by Gomez, WCBS reports. Police say Seegers then pulled out a machete and
began hacking at the victim. Although Seegers can be seen on
tape hacking at the victim at least 14 times, police say the victim was
not seriously injured in the attack. However, Seegers did manage to hit
his co-attacker. During one of his swings, Seegers chops into
Villota, who is pistol-whipping the victim, WCBS reports. Seegers nearly
severs Villota’s right arm, leaving a blood trail that the cops used to
track them down.

Paterson Police Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez
says the reason victim is still alive is because Seegers was lousy with
the machete, WCBS reports.

“The one time he swung it straight and effectively, he hit his own counterpart, his own friend,” Rodriguez said.

Police say they are still seeking the first victim and want him to come forward.

Police told WCBS that neither attack appeared to be provoked.
